Lokmanya Tilak introduced the idea of "Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav" for the awakening of people through this medium towards freedom struggle against the British Rule. Following the same, social issues were taken up along with religious duties, through this medium by the Mandal. This festival gives opportunity to show talent and also promotes creativity, unity and teamwork amongst people in our Society.

Shreerang Sahanivas Ganeshotsav Mandal (SSGM) made its humble beginnings in the year 1971, when a group of locals residing in Shreerang Society, came together to celebrate Ganeshotsav. During the initial years, the Utsav was hosted in a pandal in Ganesh Chowk, but water logging in the nearby area made the task difficult. After careful consideration, Shreerang School was finalised as the new venue and it still continues to be the place where the event is hosted every year.

SSGM marked its 25th Silver Jubilee Year in 1995 and began its journey to being one of the top most Ganeshosav Mandals in Thane and Mumbai. The committee members of SSGM took the responsibility of decorating the pandal themselves and still continue to do all the work of decoration, ornamentation as well as refurbishment by themselves to date. Over the years Team SSGM has successfully raised social awareness by including topics such as, ‘The Influence of Social Media’, ‘Global Warming’, ‘Stree Shakti’, ‘Deh Daan’, amongst many others as our themes.

This initiative has won SSGM over 70 awards and nominations including the prestigious Thane Mahanagar Palika Award, Shiv Sena Thane Zilla, Thane Police Ayukta, DNA Eco Ganesha, Loksatta, Alpha TV Marathi, etc. Every year over 25,000 devotees come to offer prayers to their beloved ‘Bappa’ and witness the spectacular decorations.
